Ivy can look very pretty on a building for the first few years BUT, once the plant eventually matures it’s growth rate can be quite staggering!
Without any real stem strength but, with extreme patience and using it’s clever clinging system it will try to gain height to reach prolonged sunlight. Once achieved it will strengthen it’s stems and start producing fruiting elements while the plant will easily double in size annually!
Even when the main stem has been cut it will take many years, even decades to disappear as the owners of this family property in Sutton at Hone discovered! As indeed I did myself too many years ago.
TOP TIP! If you like ivy (even the purchased hybrid types) as I do. Plant it in a big pot and keep it in the shade and NEVER let it cling to anything else you value!
The main stems had been cut previously so this was a straight removal job. The back wall was of no concearn but, caution was exercised to ensure as little mess was created to the neighbouring property.
Junk Bulk bags (courtesy of Timber Moudings Ltd. Thank you) were provided and filled with the removed ivy for the customer’s disposal for free at the tip.
THE TASK WAS COMPLETED BY ONE ‘GREEN GRAFTSMAN’ IN JUST OVER 8 HOURS. The ivy had damaged a number of tiles and the entire ridge, along with the West-Side guttering but with great care the removal caused just two further tiles to crack.
